Music often serves as a mirror to our deepest emotions, capturing moments when words alone fall short. My song Depression was born from one of the darkest chapters in my life. It reflects a time when hope felt distant, and pain was overwhelming. This post shares the story behind the song, the creative process, and the message I hope listeners take away.
The Low Point That Sparked the Song
At the end of 2019, I was in a place where everything seemed to be falling apart. Stress weighed heavily on me, and I felt trapped in a cycle of despair. The root of much of this pain was a recent breakup. I had been deeply involved with someone I believed had my best interests at heart. I stood by her during a difficult time, including when she was released from jail. The charge she faced was serious, something society rarely forgives, and I supported her through it all.
Despite my efforts and sacrifices, she betrayed me. That betrayal cut deep, shaking my trust and leaving me questioning everything. I was far from perfect in the relationship, but I believed the good I gave outweighed the bad. This emotional turmoil became the foundation for Depression.
Finding the Right Sound to Express Pain
While working on my EP titled Blood - Sweat - Tears, I reached out to my producer, Duan. I told him I needed a beat that carried the weight of pain, something raw and honest. What he sent back blew me away. The beat was haunting and powerful, perfectly matching the emotions I was struggling to put into words.
That night, I wrote the entire song. The lyrics poured out, fueled by the pain and confusion I felt. The music gave me a way to channel my emotions instead of letting them consume me. Soon after, I was ready to record Depression.
The Music Video and a Powerful Message
The music video for Depression was shot just one day before the tragic death of Kobe Bryant. Waking up to that news felt like a sign. It was as if the universe was telling me that the world needed this song. The video captures my raw emotions and the journey I was on—searching for true happiness and purpose despite the darkness.
Throughout the video, you see the struggle and vulnerability that inspired the song. The ending offers a glimpse of hope, showing that even in the depths of despair, healing is possible.
Why This Song Matters
Depression is more than just a song; it’s a piece of my life and a reflection of real pain. Many people face moments when they feel alone and hopeless. Music like this can remind us that those feelings are valid and that expressing them is a step toward healing.
If you’re going through a tough time, know that you’re not alone. Sometimes, sharing your story or listening to someone else’s can be the first step to finding light again.
